- is a single story building
- has drive-up, ground level access to the facility doors for easy loading and unloading of gear
- has an adjacent large parking lot or field for the outdoor practical exercise with direct same level access from the building
- has a building PA system that can linked with the instructors PA system to provide earthquake sounds throughout the building
- is not otherwise occupied during the practical session
Set-up on the day of training:
- Instructor, Theatrical Make-up artist and assistant arrive at training location at 6:15 AM on the day of training
- Access is required to grounds, gate keys required
- Access to utility service areas of building required
- Access to the building PA system and instruction regarding it's use is required
- If parking lot will be used for outside practical session, place cones or otherwise cordon off area to prevent parking in designated area
- Some assistance will be required to set-up tent used for first aid reception area
Room for lecture presentation requires:
- Adequate room with chairs for all participants (tables/desks optional)
- Room to set up two tables and an open area approximately 8x8 for demonstrations at front of class
- An LCD projector and large screen
- A large chalkboard or white board with chalk or white board markers
- A lighting situation that would allow for easy viewing of a PowerPoint
Room for application of theatrical make-up requires:
- Washable floor surface
- Running hot and cold water
- Separate from common areas
Required in advance of training session:
- Floor plans of building(s) being used with location of gas meter, main water shut off, main electrical shut-off(s) and service rooms indicated
- Site plan of surrounding grounds with overhead power lines, propane tanks and other potential hazards indicated
- Inform surrounding businesses, residents and other building occupants that training will be conducted. Indicate time that practical session will be held and, inform that fire pan for fire extinguisher training, smoke bombs and theatrical make-up for injury simulation will be used
- Consider inviting local media, security, emergency responders and emergency program officials to attend
- Consider designating someone to video record the practical session and take pictures
- Do not plan on leaving the training site for lunch, provide lunch or ask participants to bring their own
- Provide for morning coffee/snack and a cool drink for the afternoon session
- Notify local security officials and obtain access / passes as required
- Location of nearest designated Emergency Reception Centre
Required on day of training:
- Notify local security monitoring service and fire department that trainings session will be conducted indicate time that practical session will be held, and inform that fire pan for fire extinguisher training, smoke bombs and theatrical make-up for injury simulation will be used (instructor can do this, please provide local contact numbers)
- Conspicuously post "Emergency Exercise in Progress" placards (provided by instructor)
- Assign someone to shut-off all lights in building(s) being used just prior to start of practical exercise (to simulate power outage)
Participants
- Course normally accommodates a maximum of 30 active participants. If you have more than 30 people, the extra personnel can participate in the practical portion of the course as either observers or evaluators (evaluation checklists provided).
- Wear loose fitting, cotton long sleeve shirt, cotton long pants, and substantial footwear (hiking boots/ work boots or similar)
- Expect that theatrical make-up will cause permanent stains on clothing (having said that it is usually washes out) dress appropriately
- Donations of light colored long sleeve shirts and/or long pants for injury simulation purposes always greatly appreciated
- Inform the instructor in advance if there is any health condition which will limit your participation in the afternoon practical session (asthma, bad back, etc)
- Lifting of stretchers always requires four people for this scenario
- Bring pen and clipboard
- All though participant personal protective (PPE) gear is provided, consider bringing your own PPE (hard hat, gloves, eye protection, hepa filtered dust mask, coveralls, high visibility vest, flash light)
